Fishers - Firefighters are cleaning up after flames caused damage and forced the evacuation of the Fishers Walmart on 96th Street.
Firefighters say the sprinkler system did its job and put the flames out. But they say the fire, which began at around 7:25 am, caused significant damage to an area containing Christmas displays.
"We've had a fire at the Walmart this morning in the Lawn and Garden Center. That's where they've been storing Christmas decorations and such. It is in a storage area," said Sgt. Ron Lipps, Fishers Fire Department.
No injuries were reported. Fire and water damage was contained to the storage area, but smoke affected the entire building. The store was evacuated for nearly two hours until firefighters ensured the fire was out and removed smoke.
Investigators determined that the fire started in boxes that were stored too close to a radiant heater above the storage racks.
Store management did not have any estimate on dollar loss.
