Couldn't you see all of these dresses being worn today? I love that all of her pieces are timeless and classic.
Truth is, Lilly's line actually began from a juice stand (yes, a juice stand). As a young woman, she had recently married New York socialite Peter Pulitzer and moved to Palm Beach to live the life of the rich and fabulous. While being glamorous, she wanted something to keep her busy so started a juice stand with the produce from the citrus fruit groves that her husband owned. After selling loads of juice (and getting her clothes really dirty) she realized she needed a uniform that would camouflage the citrus juices, so asked a local dressmaker to create a loose shift dress in a bright colored, printed fabric. Turns out people became more interested in Lilly's dress than her juices, and wanted to know where they too could get a dress like hers, so she began selling them at her stand. Before she knew it, her old friend from school Jackie Kennedy (who just so happened to be the first lady at the time) wanted one, was photographed wearing it, and the rest? Well, that's fashion history--her designs became the unofficial summer uniform for fabulous people at play.
